Neon Systems Inc.
, Sugar Land, Texas, said its chief executive and president, Louis Woodhill, has resigned his executive posts and board seat, and that it has cut 26% of its work force. The company recently employed about 120 staff members.

Furniture maker Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. shut down three plants in New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania so that it could "consolidate" its operations into more efficient plants, laying off 584 workers in the process.

The unemployment rate rose to 5.8% last month as businesses eliminated 308,000 jobs, the steepest cuts since the 2001 recession.

EBay Inc.
plans to shut down its Half.com Web site next year, and the head of Half.com will leave the company, closing an independent site for book, music and video sales that eBay once hoped would compete fiercely against Amazon.com Inc. Half.com's roughly 65 employees in the Philadelphia area will be offered jobs in other parts of eBay.

United Airlines
is laying off another 900 flight attendants next month because it continues to bleed cash. Earlier this week, the carrier reported a $382 million loss for January, its first full calendar month in bankruptcy. United blamed the economy for the new job cuts, and said it has a surplus of flight attendants based on current service. A spokesman said United would seek volunteers for the layoffs, which take effect April 1. Under the furlough program, workers will be laid off but can be recalled.

Fast-Chip Inc.
is the latest casualty of the network processor market, as the company has laid off most of its employees and is putting its assets up for sale. The company had undergone recent layoffs that halved headcount, to roughly 30, and has now trimmed staff to "about a dozen" to make the final arrangements.
