Japan's NTT plans to eliminate 17,000 jobs, or 7.8% of its work force, as part of a three-year plan to revive its business.

Qwest said it plans to cut about 2,000 jobs, slashing its work force to 53,000, as it lowered its 2002 revenue outlook amid continued telecom weakness.

Sun Microsystems has posted a 24% drop in revenue during its fiscal third quarter and said it will lay off approximately 1,000 employees during the next three to six months. As of March 31, Sun employed 39,473 people.

Maker of telecommunications equipment, Nortel will cut 4,000 more jobs than it previously expected to. This comes after reporting a first quarter loss that it anticipated. Its net loss during the first quarter reached $841 million or 26 cents a share.

Automaker Delphi plans to eliminate 6,100 workers in an attempt to continue a restructuring move. During the first quarter, prior layoffs lowered the company's loss to $51 million.

Tellabs, maker of telecommunications gear, plans to eliminate 1,200 workers or 18% of its workforce because the company reported that its first-quarter sales dropped by more than 50%.

Andersen Worldwide is expected to announce plans to toss out 1,500 employees in the United Kingdom. The cuts would affect between 25% and 30% of U.K. staff are caused by a consequences of over-the-border business.

Jetstream Communications, the top provider of voice-over-broadband technology, has shut its doors because of tough times in the telecommunications industry. The San Jose, Calif.-based company told its employees last Friday that it could not continue operating as a stand-alone business and announced the news in a posting on its Web site Monday.
